The Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF) announced that three of its soldiers were killed by terrorists in Mozambique over the weekend, and six others were injured.
The soldiers were killed on May 3, when the terrorists ambushed them in the Katupa forest in Macomia district of Cabo Delgado province.
The RDF has troops and police in the province, which has been under attack by Ansar Al Sunnah terrorists since July 2021.
RDF spokesman Brig Gen Ronald Rwivanga said the soldiers were ambushed while on duty.
He said: “It happened on May 3 in the Katupa forest. It happened to soldiers who were on duty, three died in the ambush, six others were injured, but they are recovering. It was very bad for the enemy.”
The Katupa forest where the soldiers were killed is one of the places where the terrorists took refuge when they were driven out of other areas of Cabo Delgado.
The Macomia district in which it is located was previously controlled by the SADC Forces.
In late 2023, the Rwandan Armed Forces fought fiercely against the terrorists in the area, managing to rescue about 600 civilians who had been taken prisoner.
The RDF has troops and police in the province, which had been devastated by the Ansar Al Sunnah terrorists since July 2021.
After driving out the terrorists from various areas such as Palma, Nangade, Muidumbe, Quissanga, Macomia and Mocimboa da Praia; they are currently busy training the Mozambican army in order to increase their capacity.
The RDF says that its troops have restored peace in Cabo Delgado to at least 95%.
