Some residents of Rubavu District, particularly those working at Cyanzarwe Market, are complaining of significant losses caused by rain that leaks through the market’s damaged roof, forcing some traders to operate around the market’s perimeter. Those still inside the market say that it is not allowed to work outside.
The market is located in Cyanzarwe Sector, Ryabizige Cell, in Musene Village.
Dukuze Jean Pierre, a trader at Ryabizige Market, told BWIZA that the market needs renovation because they are incurring continuous losses.
He said, “We need this market to be reconsidered and renovated, with proper planning for its development so it can generate income for the country. Many traders have left this market for others, leading to our financial losses.”
He added that if the market were renovated and roofed, the traders who left would return.
Hakizimana Jerome, a resident of Rwanzekuma Cell, stated, “We have products, but the market we were given was poorly constructed and deteriorated quickly. We ask for its renovation so we can invest and improve our livelihoods.”
He added that the contractor who built the market in 2010 did a poor job, leading traders to avoid the market due to its constant leaks.
Niyonzima Alexandre, a resident of Ryabizige Cell, expressed his frustration about shopping in a leaking market, saying, “Our market is old and leaks. As customers, we witness it and ask for renovation in collaboration with the authorities, while we also commit to maintaining it.”
The Mayor of Rubavu District, Mulindwa Prosper, acknowledged the issue, stating that they are aware of outdated government buildings, including Cyanzarwe Market, and are seeking solutions.
He explained, “During the general inspection of public buildings, including Cyanzarwe Market, we identified some that need renovation. We are working with private investors to possibly hand it over to them for development and profit.”
Residents insist on the market’s renovation, emphasizing its importance for trade with neighboring communities. However, attendance at the market remains low due to its poor condition, which exposes goods to rain and traders to harsh weather.
Nyanzarwe Sector, where the market is located, is a rural area in Rubavu District that lacks proper infrastructure like roads, clean water, and electricity, despite having over 27,000 residents.
