Ntazinda Erasme, the former mayor of Nyanza district who had been suspended from his duties, was released this Friday after spending nearly two weeks in detention.
Ntazinda had been on trial at the Kicukiro Primary Court facing charges including adultery and abandoning his family.
The court released him after his wife wrote to the court on May 3rd stating that she was withdrawing her complaint and had forgiven her husband.
The Kicukiro Primary Court indicated that Ntazinda Erasme began committing the offenses of adultery and family abandonment in August 2023, when he started living with another woman as husband and wife.
This prompted his legal spouse to report him to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, which then arrested him before transferring the case to the prosecution.
After the complaint was officially withdrawn, the prosecution also acknowledged that it had no further interest in pursuing the case.
Ntazinda Erasme was dismissed from his role as Nyanza district mayor after serving in the position for nine years.
Before leading Nyanza, he was the President of the Rayon Sports Volleyball Club.
