Sudanese Armed Forces announced on Monday that they had retaken two areas in North Kordofan State after expelling the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), signaling a possible escalation in the ongoing conflict in central Sudan.
The advance in the areas of “Al-Riash” and “Kazgail” could open access routes into the neighboring states of West and South Kordofan, which are heavily controlled by RSF, according to Sudan Tribune.
Speaking on the matter, Army Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Nabil Abdullah said:
“By God’s help, the Al-Sayyad mobile unit defeated the remnants of Daglo’s forces in Al-Riash and Kazgail… after inflicting heavy losses on the enemy.”
Reports from the region indicate that RSF had captured Kazgail at the end of May and had been deploying forces there to try and block the army’s progress.
Fighting in South and West Kordofan during May and June forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee to the state capital, El-Obeid.
Humanitarian agencies report that displaced people are living in dire conditions with little or no access to essential aid.
