The Kenyan government has announced a special investigation targeting individuals from Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Wagisu community of Uganda living in West Pokot County.
This follows the arrest of 13 individuals in Bendera, suspected of heinous crimes including cannibalism and trafficking in human body parts.
West Pokot County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi said some suspects have already confessed, adding that they had been illegally occupying land designated for a road project. He stated that these illegal settlements will be demolished and the individuals subjected to deep scrutiny.
Kenyan officials emphasized that regional cooperation within the East African Community (EAC) does not override national security obligations, which is why this thorough vetting of all foreign residents in the area is being conducted.
The investigation is ongoing, while the 13 suspects will remain in custody for 21 days as the prosecution gathers evidence.
