Burundi’s President Sends Top Generals, Including Ndakugarika, into Retirement

President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi has sent two high-ranking police generals into retirement, including Gérvais Ndirakobuca.

On Monday, May 19, President Ndayishimiye issued a decree officially retiring the two generals.

Lieutenant General of Police Gérvais Ndirakobuca, also known by his alias “Ndakugarika,” aged 55, was not only one of the highest-ranking police officers in the country but has also served as Prime Minister of Burundi since September 2022.

Before becoming Prime Minister, replacing General Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, Ndirakobuca served as the Minister of Internal Security.

The other officer retired by President Ndayishimiye is Major General Générose Ngendanganya, who holds the distinction of being the highest-ranking female officer in the history of Burundi.

She has been serving as the head of the Permanent Commission within the Ministry of Internal Security, specifically in charge of combating the spread of small and light weapons.
