On Saturday, May 24, eleven detainees escaped from the detention cell of the Prosecutor’s Office in collaboration with the Peace Court of Sekebanza, located in Kongo Central Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The local administrator, Patchely Lendo, confirmed the incident and explained that the escapees took advantage of the building’s structure and the shortage of police officers to pursue them.
According to information obtained by Radio Okapi, the escape occurred at around 8 a.m.
The inmates managed to force open the iron door of the cell, overpowering the single police officer assigned to guard them.

Patchely Lendo noted that most of the 11 escapees were facing charges of rape and were awaiting transfer to Tshela Prison, where they were to serve their sentences.
