“The agreement signed on Friday in Washington between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda focuses on peace in eastern DRC and is not about selling our resources,“ stated DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner this past Sunday.
Minister Wagner made these comments on the national broadcaster RTNC, emphasizing that the agreement must be respected to ensure lasting peace in the region, as urged by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Kayikwamba said:
“If it were an auction, if it were about selling, as some say, our resources at a peace-price, I think we would have proceeded at various levels. We would have started selling, but that’s not what we did today.”
According to her, the peace accord signed between the DRC and Rwanda aims to end nearly three decades of conflict.
She clarified:
“There are no clauses about economic issues or key mineral resources. The agreement is clear. It fully lays the foundation for a positive atmosphere where we can even consider encouraging investor return or strengthening the economy.”
Meanwhile, Patrick Muyaya, DRC Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, called the deal a testament to strong commitment, though he acknowledged much work remains.
