Heavy Clashes in North Kivu: 6 Dead as Wazalendo Attack M23 Positions

At least six people have been confirmed dead and over twenty injured following intense fighting between M23 rebels and Wazalendo militia from Thursday, May 15 to Friday, May 16, 2025, in the Bambo area of North Kivu Province.

The fighting, now in its third day, has escalated significantly, worsening the situation in Bambo, Rutshuru territory. M23 rebels are holding their ground in the positions they had captured.

In response, Wazalendo forces have launched counterattacks and ambushes, according to a local official speaking to the press.

Reports from Bambo indicate that after heavy clashes on Friday morning, Wazalendo fighters retook the Bambo area, pushing M23 rebels back to Kabizo/Butare, roughly 2 to 3 kilometers from Bambo.

Civilians are still hiding in their homes, fearing for their lives. Some have sought refuge at the Bambo hospital and have not yet returned home due to the ongoing insecurity.

There is currently no verified information about the status of Kishishe, which had previously fallen under M23 control. However, some reports suggest M23 may have vacated the town center, with speculation that FDLR fighters may now be present.

The conflict is intensifying, especially in Bwito, where M23 is battling both Wazalendo and FDLR militias, with reports of heavy weapons being used.

As fighting escalates in eastern DRC, fear among civilians continues to grow. Many residents have lost hope for peace and stability in the region.
