The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested Mwitende Abdoulkarim, widely known on social media as Burikantu, on suspicion of unlawful detention.
According to RIB, on July 20, 2025, Burikantu locked in young women who had visited his home in Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo District, refusing to let them leave unless they first paid him back for transport and drinks he claimed to have bought for them.
Sources say the incident escalated after one of the girls declined his request to join him in a room for a private talk. Burikantu reportedly became angry and decided to detain them.
Some of the girls offered him the little money they had, which he refused, and they remained trapped. Eventually, they called the police, who intervened and freed them. Burikantu was immediately arrested.
RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry confirmed the arrest, stating that investigations are underway and the case file is being prepared for submission to the Prosecution Authority.
The offense Burikantu is accused of falls under Article 151 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence ranging from five to seven years.
