The Deputy Inspector General of Police in Kenya has resigned as investigations continue into the death of a blogger who died while in police custody.
On Monday, June 16, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat announced his resignation amid the ongoing probe into the death of Albert Ojwang.
Ojwang was found dead in a police cell after being arrested for allegedly accusing Lagat of corruption on social media.
His death sparked protests in Nairobi, where demonstrators demanded Lagat’s resignation, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.
On Friday, Kenyan President William Ruto stated that his government will “protect citizens from rogue police officers” and called for a thorough investigation into Ojwang’s death.
