Tanzanian police have launched a major investigation into a Kenyan national suspected of illegally accessing the Tanzanian government’s digital systems and registering himself as a high-ranking government official.
According to sources from the country’s security services, the suspect infiltrated the government’s data servers, altered official documents, and falsely appointed himself as a Provincial Commissioner—an important position responsible for overseeing government operations at the regional level.
Reports indicate that once he accessed the system, the man allocated himself a monthly salary of 60 million Tanzanian shillings (approximately 30 million Rwandan francs, depending on the exchange rate).
The incident went viral on social media and online media platforms, prompting security agencies to launch a thorough investigation to uncover how it happened and what tricks were used.
A spokesperson for the Tanzanian Police described it as “a serious case of fraud possibly involving individuals with high-level technological expertise.” He added that the investigation is also examining whether the Kenyan may have had accomplices inside the country.
Cybersecurity analysts say this breach highlights critical vulnerabilities in how Tanzania manages its computer systems. They recommend an in-depth review and meaningful reforms to strengthen digital security.
