Kenya’s Sabasaba Protests Turn Deadly: 31 Killed, Over 100 Injured

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has revealed that the number of people killed during the recent Sabasaba protests in the country has risen to 31.

This figure is twice the number previously announced by the Kenyan Police.

In a statement released on Tuesday, KNCHR stated that besides the 31 deaths, at least 107 people were injured, and around 532 individuals were arrested.

Additionally, two people have been reported missing.

The Commission also mentioned significant property damage, though the total cost of the destruction is yet to be determined.

KNCHR President Raymond Nyeris emphasized that all those involved—whether civilians or police officers—must be held accountable.

He said:

“We strongly condemn all actions that violate human rights and call for accountability for all responsible parties.”

The Sabasaba protests took place on July 7, marking the 35th anniversary of Kenyans demanding that then-President Daniel Arap Moi introduce multiparty democracy.

The protests were marked by violent clashes between demonstrators and Kenyan police, with tear gas, stones, and live bullets being used.
