Residents of Shingiro Sector in Musanze District assaulted the sector executive secretary on Thursday.
The incident happened on Thursday, May 8, when Théoneste Hanyurwabake, the executive secretary of Shingiro, together with other local authorities, attempted to demolish a house built by a resident on land designated for agriculture.
The assault was confirmed by Musanze District Mayor, Claudien Nsengimana, during a press briefing held after a meeting with Shingiro residents.
Mayor Nsengimana explained: “The sector leadership had conducted a construction inspection and informed the resident that the building had to be demolished. They had already halted the construction before the house was completed, and the resident had received official notification. However, he defied the order and continued building.”
“So, when the authorities came to carry out the demolition, instead of complying, the resident resisted. Other residents also joined in… we could say they obstructed the authorities. The sector executive secretary was attacked, but thanks to the presence of security personnel, the situation did not escalate.”
The mayor added that although he did not disclose the number of attackers, those involved in the incident will be arrested and brought to justice.
Following the incident, the district authorities met with the residents and urged them to respect government regulations to avoid legal trouble. They also reminded citizens to consult local authorities before building, to ensure their construction is authorized.
