American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church by the 76th conclave on Thursday, May 8, by a college of 133 cardinals, on the second day of the conclave held in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

Just like in 2005 and 2013, two days were enough to elect a new Pope. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost chose the name Leo for his pontificate, becoming Pope Leo XIV.

He is the second Pope from the Americas after Francis of Argentina, and the first Pope from the United States.

Who is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost?
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, USA, to a French father and an Italian mother, Robert Francis Prevost was elected the new Pope of the Catholic Church on May 8, 2025, and took the name Pope Leo XIV.

He is the first American ever to become the head of the Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, at age 88.

Background and Religious Life
Prevost entered the Order of St. Augustine seminary in 1973. He later studied mathematics at Villanova University, and earned a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He was ordained a priest in 1982.

He served in Peru from 1985 to 1998 as a priest, seminary teacher, and parish leader. From 2001 to 2013, he led the Order of St. Augustine globally.

Church Leadership
In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the Chiclayo Diocese in Peru. In 2015, he became its bishop. In 2023, he was made a cardinal and appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In 2025, he was also named head of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and Cardinal-Bishop of Albano.

Global Christian Leader
Pope Leo XIV is known for his ability to unify, his international experience, and his understanding of global issues. He speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, and reads Arabic and Latin.

After his election, he pledged to continue Pope Francis’s legacy of dialogue, collaboration, and reform. In his first speech, he emphasized unity, peace, and honored Pope Francis’s positive legacy.

Vision and Challenges
Pope Leo XIV is expected to uphold Francis’s reforms, fight corruption, and prioritize the poor and marginalized. His election comes at a time when the Church faces declining membership in wealthy countries, internal divisions, and fallout from clerical abuse scandals.

His leadership experience and pastoral background offer hope that he will face these challenges with wisdom and compassion.
