President Ndayishimiye Rebukes Musician-Turned-Politician Mkombozi

On Friday, May 30, 2025, the President of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, made controversial remarks directed at artist Mkombozi Lucifer, who recently announced his candidacy for Parliament, even though he reportedly knows his chances of winning are slim.

The President made these statements in Bujumbura during a community activity with youth to rehabilitate the Campus Kamenge sports field.

In his speech, President Ndayishimiye said he asked Mkombozi why he chose to spend 2 million Burundian Francs on his campaign despite knowing he would likely lose.

He stated:

“He told me it wasn’t a waste because the money, even if he loses, will go to the state treasury and help the country. But I told him: ‘Remember that politics is not a playground or a place for entertainment.’”

The President’s remarks sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some praising his honesty, while others accused him of trying to suppress the democratic right of professionals from other sectors to run for office.

Mkombozi Lucifer, who gained popularity through music, needs at least 40% of the vote to be allowed into Parliament.

This controversy comes as the elections approach, with ongoing debates about the qualifications and conduct of political candidates intensifying in Burundi.
