Putin Promises Harsh Response to Ukrainian Drone Strike on Russian Warplanes

This past Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had told him “strongly” over the phone that he would respond decisively to Ukraine’s drone strike over the past weekend that damaged Russian warplanes at military airfields.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said:

“We talked about the attack on Russian parked aircraft, about Ukraine, and other various attacks carried out by both sides.”
“It was a good conversation, but it wasn’t one aimed at immediate peace.”

The phone call reportedly lasted an hour and fifteen minutes, and according to Euronews, it was the first time Trump had spoken to Putin since May 19.

During a cabinet meeting held Wednesday, Putin did not address the violent cross-border incursions by Ukraine into Russia on Sunday. Instead, he only mentioned the Tuesday operation by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), which damaged the Kerch Bridge.

The bridge is a strategic piece of infrastructure illegally constructed by Moscow after the 2014 annexation of part of Ukrainian territory.
