Bikorimana Jean Bosco, a resident of Gisagara District, Kigembe Sector, has written to the President of the Rwandan Parliament, requesting the introduction of a mandatory six-month trial period for all couples intending to get married.
In his well-articulated and analytical letter, Bikorimana proposes that a new legal provision be added to Rwandan law requiring couples planning to marry to live together as husband and wife on a trial basis for six months before being allowed to marry legally.
He argues that such a trial would help couples get to know each other better, assess their compatibility, and ultimately reduce conflicts and divorces that often occur in many households.
Bikorimana stated: “This will help people know each other deeply and understand whether they are truly ready for cohabitation.”
To support his idea, he compared it to other sectors of life where trial periods are standard, such as new civil servants who are subjected to a six-month probation period before being fully confirmed in their roles.
He concluded his letter by expressing concern over the fact that some couples have children shortly after marriage only to separate later, a situation he believes could be prevented if couples had enough time to understand what living together truly entails.
