Stromae’s Rwandan Roots Shine in Netflix’s The Old Guard 2

The new film The Old Guard 2, now streaming on Netflix, features various songs, including a track by internationally renowned artist Stromae, who has Rwandan heritage.

His 2022 song “Fils de Joie” appears in one part of this highly anticipated film.

The track, known for its powerful lyrics exploring the lives of women and how society treats them, was among eight songs selected by the film’s music team, including Steffen Thum and Ruth Barrett, who created the movie’s original score.

Although Netflix has not revealed exactly how Stromae’s song was chosen, it is common in the film industry for music supervisors to work with artists’ representatives to pick songs that match the film’s emotion, themes, or setting.

A song like “Fils de Joie” stands out in such selection processes because of its unique rhythm, strong message, and emotional resonance, all essential elements in crafting memorable scenes.

Stromae’s global reputation and Rwandan roots likely contributed to the decision to feature his track.

While no exact figure has been disclosed regarding what Stromae was paid, it is estimated that a track used in a major production like The Old Guard 2 could command between $50,000 and $100,000 USD (approx. 76–143 million Rwandan Francs).

The payment varies based on factors such as whether the song is used in a pivotal scene, during visual sequences, in the main storyline, or if it belongs to a high-profile artist—all of which can increase its value.

Featuring an African artist—especially one with Rwandan heritage—is a strong signal that African music is gaining global recognition.

Though Stromae sings in French and lives in Belgium, he has a Rwandan father and often references his Rwandan roots in his music.
