Togo’s President Gnassingbé Hosts Landmark Mediation Summit on Congo Crisis

The African Union Mediator, Faure Gnassingbé, who is also the President of the Republic of Togo, held a significant meeting on Saturday, May 17, in Lomé, with the AU Panel of Mediators.

According to the Presidency of the Republic of Togo, the discussions focused on harmonizing the existing mediation processes of the Nairobi and Luanda initiatives.

Participants emphasized the need for greater coordination between mediators and facilitators through a collaborative approach, and called for enhanced cooperation among regional blocs such as the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and partners including Qatar and the United States.

This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to restore peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and to strengthen the relationship between the DRC and Rwanda.

The participants welcomed the recent positive signals shown by the parties involved in the eastern DRC crisis.

The AU Panel of Mediators includes former and current heads of state:

  • Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria)

  • Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya)

  • Mokgweetsi Masisi (Botswana)

  • Catherine Samba-Panza (Central African Republic)

  • Sahle-Work Zewde (Ethiopia)
