The Twirwaneho rebel group, which claims to protect Congolese citizens of Banyamulenge ethnicity, announced its new leadership on Tuesday, including the appointment of a new president.
Twirwaneho is part of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), a coalition fighting against the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement released Tuesday, the group confirmed that Prof. Freddy Rukema Kaniki, who previously served as Vice President of AFC, has now been appointed as President of Twirwaneho.
Other key appointments include Brigadier General Charles Sematama, named Deputy Vice President for Military and Security Affairs and also appointed Chief of the Armed Forces.
Mugisha Alexis was appointed Second Vice President in charge of Governance, Politics, and Diplomacy, while Kibasumba Adèle was named Secretary-General of Twirwaneho.
