Uganda Halts Military Cooperation with Germany Over Ambassador’s Alleged Interference

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced the suspension of all military cooperation with Germany, citing the conduct of the German Ambassador.

The UPDF stated that it has ceased all ongoing military collaboration with the Federal Republic of Germany, and that this decision takes immediate effect.

This move comes in response to credible intelligence reports alleging that the current German Ambassador to Uganda, Mathias Schauer, has been actively involved in activities deemed to destabilize the country, according to UPDF spokesperson Col. Chris Magezi.

The suspension will remain in place until the issue concerning the ambassador’s alleged involvement with unauthorized political and military groups operating within Uganda is fully resolved.

This development signals an escalation in the growing tension between Ugandan authorities and Western diplomats.

Ambassador Schauer has recently come under intense scrutiny, with Ugandan intelligence accusing him of interfering in the country’s internal politics and maintaining ties with opposition groups.

The German Embassy has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The decision was made just hours after the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political group led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced a protest scheduled for June 5 at the German Embassy.

The PLU stated that the protest is based on what it described as “the inappropriate conduct of the ambassador,” which could further inflame this diplomatic standoff.
