Ugandan Army Chief Orders Arrest of Brigadier General over Corruption Allegations

The Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the arrest and detention of Brig. Gen. Cyrus Besigye Bekunda.

Brigadier General Bekunda was the commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Construction Brigade.

He, along with several other UPDF officers, is under investigation for corruption-related crimes.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Gen. Muhoozi accused the general and his colleagues of corruption and dishonoring the integrity of the army, vowing to make an example out of them.

He stated:

“Yesterday, I ordered the arrest of Brig. Bekunda Besigye along with other officers from the Construction Brigade. They are corrupt, have defiled, and dishonored the sacred principle that the UPDF is self-reliant and professional.”

He added:

“They took money and misused it! Let their punishment serve as a warning to others.”

Brig. Gen. Bekunda’s arrest comes just days after Col. Godfrey Tukamwakira, also a former commander of the Construction Brigade, was arrested on orders from Gen. Kainerugaba.
