Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has protested the arrest of Col James Kasule, Deputy Commander of the 2nd Division in the UPDF, demanding his immediate release while investigations into allegations of robbery and kidnapping related to Mubende Gold continue.
According to security sources, the arrest occurred on Saturday after Col Kasule and his security detail allegedly detained a gold trader under unclear circumstances. It is reported the trader had a large sum of cash from a gold transaction, which was forcibly transferred via mobile money.
In a post on X on Monday morning, Gen Muhoozi stated:
“I hear that our Intelligence officers arrested Col. Kasule for something. He should immediately be released.”
He added: “Col. Kasule is one of our old fighters. I know him very well. I shall deal with him myself.”
The arrest sparked questions when Col Kasule’s official UPDF vehicle was found at the scene, raising concerns over misuse of military resources.
He is currently detained at Makindye Military Barracks pending the outcome of the inquiry. Gen Muhoozi’s intervention highlights Col Kasule’s longstanding service and the sensitivity surrounding his detention.
As of Monday, no formal charges had been filed, and it remains uncertain whether military or civilian prosecutors will proceed in light of the CDF’s directive.
