In Rwanda, dermatology experts say there are several reasons people lose their hair, including genetics, hormonal changes, stress, poor diet, and misuse of hair products and medications.
Dr. Muhima Giovanni, a specialist in skin diseases, explains that wearing hats for too long or constantly covering the head can prevent the scalp from “breathing,” which can gradually lead to hair thinning or loss. He also emphasizes that hormonal changes—such as during menopause or after childbirth—can cause hair to stop growing.
He adds that a lack of nutrients like iron, zinc, and calcium, along with excessive fatigue, are also linked to hair loss. He states:
“Hair has a root system like a womb that supports its growth. If that system is damaged, the hair stops growing.”
The advice given includes avoiding stress, eating a balanced diet, sleeping well, and avoiding harsh chemicals in hair products. Those who notice unusual changes in their hair are advised to consult a doctor as early as possible.
