The former President of Zambia, Edgar Lungu, has died at the age of 68, as confirmed by his party, the Patriotic Front.
In a statement released by the party, it was revealed that Lungu had been receiving medical care in South Africa, where he was being treated for an illness that was not publicly disclosed.
Edgar Lungu served as Zambia’s president from 2015 to 2021, when he lost the elections to the current president, Hakainde Hichilema. After the elections, he had announced his retirement from politics but later made a return to political activities, with signs pointing to an intention to run for office again.
His death has deeply saddened many people in his country and close associates, sparking tributes and condolences from various people across the world.
